FOR once, the RC Archdiocese of Liverpool is not under fire for downsizing its property porfolio of precious churches.
Instead, the Diocese of Shrewsbury is being censured by petition-wielding parishioners for plans to sell St Peter’s and St Paul’s, New Brighton, whose huge copper dome on the Wirral skyline garnered it the nickname of the “dome of home for incoming sailors.
The 1935 Grade II-listed church needs £1m of repairs.
The diocese offers four options: 1) repair; 2) sell for redevelopment; 3) de-list and abandon; 4) consider any other ideas. Is that it? Enough to shake your faith, eh?
