Musing over openings

AS TIRELESSLY detailed here, St George’s Hall has been opened twice, firstly by former Lord Mayor Lady Doreen Jones and again 20-plus years later on April 23, by the Prince of Wales. Now a brouhaha has erupted over leading Liverpool solicitor and cultural benefactor Rex Makin being snubbed with no invitation to meet HRH.

Adding insult to injury, Mr Makin backs the Roscoe Citizenship Lectures, delivered that day by Prince Charles. Even the intense lobbying of Mr Makin’s best friend, the formidable Anne Robinson, is unlikely to cause the event to be re-staged a third time to right these slights.

Mr Makin was especially riled to be excluded from the right Royal luncheon, as Liverpool chief executive Colin Hilton took his mother. Surely there’s no scintilla of truth in the rumour that Colin’s mum was told to say: “If anyone asks, just say you’re Mrs Makin?
